Folder Designer: Custom Icons App Reviews

Does not work

After selecting an Icon and background color, when you click “Apply to Folder” a window pops-up offering you a selection of desktop folders, but unfortunately quickly closes. As a result you cannot proceed. Have downloaded app again with no luck. Folder Designer does not work.

Dead from the start

I have tried several times to use Folder Designer and each time it has failed. It appears to work fine until I attempt to apply the design to an actual folder. The attempt fails because the Finder window opens and then immediately closes before I can make a selection. I suspect it is caused as the result of my having loaded 10.10.3, the Photo Beta. I emailed FipLab but so far there’s no response. I’ve been waiting for a app like this for a long time. I hope they can clean it up.

not working

I follow all the directions, then I get a message saying the folder make take some time to appear. After 20 minutes, no folder!

Applying photos sold me HOWEVER - in actual use = (

photo’s allows really any look. Because you can make a custom design in photo editing software and then apply the photo to the folder. So you could do things like a gradient… of color(s) and then save that as a photo and apply to the folder. I liked that it would take a photo and convert it to a icon. Again you can create any icon and load it in this way. It would be 5 stars if it allowed you to do the artwork. for example to make a gradient of two colors. Or to be able to drop pixels to make a icon. Instead you must do this in another program and save then load into this. Ok for me, but at 1.99 This is fine, it says it’s 60% off. At normal price it’s lacking in features and I’d not have purchased it at that price. Also says comes with large selection of icons. (it’s a small selection of basic items). But no problem, make your own in photoshop. I can recommend it at 1.99. More than that would be over priced for the limited features. Another reviewer mentioned the interface. (Scaling works fine for me and I’m able to slide it easily though each pixel size) so no problem there. “Tint” a photo they mentioned… you can do this in photoshop first. But like I said it would be nice to impliment these changes in the app. Inferface is SIMPLE and works great as is… but needs more features. I guess the BIGGEST draw back for me is it appear to only modify the FOLDER shaped icon. If would be cool if we could re-shape the folder into something else. Even if it’s a way to reduce the size of the folder and allow us to add a drop shadow behind it. It would also be nice if it could allow editing of other icons - not just folders. So we could make custom hard drive icon etc. That can be done manually but it’s tedious, a app that would force the operator to stay in the guide lines during creation would be nice. Because doing it manually, if you don’t do proper size or format, it won’t’ work. Then you have to open the info window, unlock changes and drag the new icon over the old one. One app to do all the steps would be great and worth the higher price this will become when the sale is over. UPDATE - lowered from 4 to 2 stars. I started using it and found that you can’t apply a photo and a folder color. instead the folder color tints the photo to a mono tone. WORSE - I started applying images to my folders and found that they look dull. I noticed that my white background was a muddy blue. I discovered that they have some small level of opacity set… so that you see the blue folder through the photo! YUCK. You can’t tint the folder to white unless you tint the entire photo. Unless there is a transparancy setting I’ve not see… but doesn’t look like it. I want to at least change the folder to white so the photo looks good or please remove the transparancy.

not ready for prime time

The icon for this app is a paint brush painting a folder a different color, so one would assume that the software could do this accurately, but not yet, apparently. There is a very limited number of colors one can make a folder even though having a color picker implies that you could use any color in the spectrum. Not the case. One example- I selected a light pink for a folder but when it was applied, the folder was mauve. I changed the color to a deeper pink and the color was the exact same mauve. When I selected white for a folder, I got gray. Support’s reply to this issue: "this is happening due to the blending modes used to overlay the color onto the folder. This is something were going to look into improving in a future version. “ When I asked when it would be fixed, the response was, "I dont have a timeframe for this feature yet.”

Great Little App

Folder Designer has made a drab series of folders into easily identifiable, colorful, and very unique folders. This program may not be perfect in every way, but it has worked beautifully for me on every attempt to customize my folders. I love this application...

Why??

Do not see any good reason to use this. Looked very cool, not really!! Folders look huge on advertisement-very small in finder!! Would not buy or recommend!!

Great little app

Easy to use. It would be nice if it could get into iPhoto. Right now we have to export to us a picture on a folder. I like coloring the folder since it make it easier to see on our desktops. No problem figuring everything out

HOW

keeps telling me how easy it is to use……I’m still clueless I have designed dissappearing folders for awhile…..nice ones….where are they? I see no pattern choices come up either so I got into choosing icon packs that are not stored in the app…..why not? I would really like to use this app Instead of telling me how easy it is…..please include instructions….. thank you

I think it’s GREAT!

This worked for me, right from the start. I am running OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks on a mid-2011 Mac Pro. i did not have any of the issues that the other writers referred to here. It was not very hard to figure out how to make it work. Thank You for this neat little app!

Helps Folders Stand Out

App makes Folders stand out. They remind me of Mac OS 9s colored folders, which I always thought were cool. I just wish this app worked for changing the colors of non-folder icons.. that would really be super helpful (especially since Apple replaced labels with tiny tag dots that arent so visible in list view, Id like to be able to make non-folders stand out with color too). Super great app for changing folders!

why not?

This is awesome, who doesn’t love a little customization?

Nice

Not gonna lie—I got this as a free app, and it looked amusing. When I worked with it and saw how versatile it was incorporating photos and line art onto custom folders, it turned out to be really fun to use! Thanks!

AMAZING APP!!!!

I thank the deveoplers for this amazing.I hate it took me this long to find it after a year.Great job!!!!!!

Sweet little app!

Ths app does what it says, and allows one to break most of Joni Ive’s rules about interface design, and this app will help you to return to an interface that looks more like Windows. Well, perhaps that’s overstating the case. You can change just the look of folders, with color, pattern, and image imprint. All the functions work well, so I can recommend this simple tool to de-pastel your Yosemite interface.

Very Limited

Included icons are few and limited in scope. Can’t make mass changes to all folders. Once an icon is put in the editor, even if you disable icons, it will insert the icon you had previously used into a new folder when you apply the changes in the editor unless you quit and restart.

Great for sorting

This is a great app. I use it to group folders for my son’s homeschooling. He has a much easier time finding what he needs now.

Nice App Finally color returns to the MAC

I have this app and another similar app and I give this one 4 start because what I like about the other one is that you can slide the folder you want to color into the open application instead of finding the folder on this one. Other than than, it’s a nice app and I like the versatility of chooing your own colors. I did have that problem of putting in my own icon pix which I slid into t he icon area. It took awhile to get rid of it, but I think but closing the app and reopening it, the customization was gone.

This is so fun!

I LOVE this app! It’s the best three bucks I’ve ever spent! I’ve always wanted the ability to change the color of the folders, and now I can not only do that, but add photos on the cover! I’m sooo stoked!

Need more icons!

I really love this app, simple to use, I am going to give four stars because I need more icons.
